The Forster Codex I, the oldest of the three Forster manuscripts, dates back to 1487-1490. It contains studies of geometry, engineering and architecture, with insights into hydraulic machines, mathematical proportions and drawing instruments. Leonardo also analyses the construction of buildings and techniques for optimising architectural structures, demonstrating his scientific approach to design.
